Irvine Personal Injury Accidents Affect Residents Every YearWhile the city is considered one of the safest places to live in the United States, the most experienced Irvine personal injury lawyers will tell you that this is no guarantee that you will be immune from a number of accidents. Even though Irvine was ranked number one by the FBI as the safest big city in the country for four consecutive years in terms of crime, residents of Irvine are still vulnerable to injuries from traffic accidents, dog attacks, defective products and workplace accidents. For example, even though Irvine is considered a bicycle-friendly city with 44.5 miles of off road trails and 282 miles of on road lanes for its 212,000 residents, bicycle accidents do still happen. In fact, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that two people were killed and 43 others were injured in Irvine bicycle accidents in 2007. The CHP said that the most common causes of bicycle accidents were car drivers making unsafe left or right turns, drivers opening their doors in the path of a passing cyclist, and drivers failing to give right of way to cyclists. The list of accident injuries include everything from minor scrapes and scratches to more serious brain and spinal trauma. In addition, statistics show that 259 people were injured in pedestrian accidents and 39 in motorcycle accidents in Irvine. Statistics show however that motorcycle accidents and fatalities are on the rise each year. While the number seems low, bicycle safety advocates say that many statistics of bicycle accidents are underreported. They point out that police don't bother to write up a report unless the cyclist is injured or if there is property damage. Safety Measures Can Cut Down On Personal Injuries But Are No GuaranteeIrvine however prides itself on its reputation for safety and conducts regular programs at the community level to ensure the safety of its residents. Knowing that most traffic accidents are caused by drunk drivers, the city recently conducted sobriety checkpoints to weed out drunk drivers from the road. In a checkpoint held during September 2009, the Irvine Police Department said that out of 338 vehicles that were stopped, three people were arrested for drinking under the influence. In terms of bicycle safety meantime, there are many organizations that spearhead cyclists' causes and concerns. The Bicycle Safety Program at the University of California Irvine, for example, actively promotes bike safety on its campus and requires all cyclists to register their bikes. However, even with the most stringent safety measures in place, some accidents simply cannot be avoided. In this case, it is helpful to have an Orange County personal injury lawyer you can trust.
