Candles Sold at Dollar Tree Stores Recalled for Fire and Burn Hazards

candles

Nearly 143,000 small votive candles sold exclusively at Dollar Tree are being recalled because they pose serious fire and burn injury hazards. According to a USA Today news report, the recall notice posted on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC), 142,740 Sure Scents 2-1 Peaceful Stream/Moonlit Waves Candles are part of the recall and consumers should immediately stop using the candles.

Details of the Recall

The notice said that the candles’ high flames could ignite the surface of the wax or cause the glass to break posing fire and burn hazards. No injuries have been reported so far, but there have been two reports that flame height reached above the glass, causing the glass to break. Texas-based Adco Trading Inc imported the candles.

The candles are about 2.5 inches tall with a powder blue color wax in a glass votive. They were sold at Dollar Tree stores nationwide from July through September 2020 for $1. Consumers who have these products at home can call Dollar Tree for a full refund. The company says on its website that consumers can return the recalled products at any of its stores for a refund or exchange for which a receipt or original packaging is not required.

This is the second recent candle recall. Last month, retailer Kohl’s recalled 512,000 of its Sonoma Goods for Life, three-wick candles because of the fire and burn injuries. CPSC alerted consumers that the candle’s high flames could ignite the wax’s surface and cause the glass to break. Kohl’s received 29 reports that involved high flames and/or breaking glass containers with the three-wick candles. Five of those incidents resulted in burn injuries and six of them involved property damage.

Product Liability Issues

Burn injuries have the potential to cause serious damage or even death. Product manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that they make products that are safe for consumers. If you or a loved one has been injured by a dangerous or defective product, it is important to understand that you have legal rights. You may be able to file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, surgery, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced product defect lawyer can help injured victims and their families better understand their legal rights and options.
