Details of the Wrong-Way Rollover Crash in Newport Beach

California Highway Patrol received reports of a car traveling north in the southbound lanes of the State Route 73 toll road freeway just after 8 pm on Saturday, January 24. Soon afterward, the wrong-way driver was reported hitting speeds of about 100 mph.

At about 8:15 pm, the vehicle struck another car. The crash happened south of Bonita Canyon Drive in Newport Beach. It involved a black SUV and a silver sedan, but it is unclear which vehicle had been traveling the wrong way.

When emergency services reached the scene of the car accident, they found the two vehicles badly damaged. The damage was caused by the initial impact, as well as the force of the cars flipping over in the rollover accident. Three people were trapped inside and had sustained critical injuries.

The incident was upgraded to a Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident. Fire crews worked to free the victims from the wreckage and rush them to nearby hospitals.

The freeway was closed down for about two hours to allow officers to investigate the scene and remove the wreckage from the road.

According to police, the vehicle traveling the wrong way was registered to a missing person from Cypress. The investigation is ongoing.

Another multi-car crash happened on January 30th, leading to one person dying when the accident happened on the 405 freeway in Irvine.
