General Motors has issued a new safety recall involving a small number of its full-size trucks and SUVs. Here is exactly what GM has reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration—no more, no less.
The recall (NHTSA campaign number 26V289000) affects a total of 66 vehicles. It covers certain 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, and Suburban models equipped with four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The same applies to the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL, as well as the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
A limited number of 2015–2020 GM SUVs and trucks may also be included if they previously received a replacement transfer case from the same affected batch during earlier service work.
The Defect
Certain transfer cases left the supplier, Magna Powertrain de México, without a critical oil pickup tube installed. Without this tube, oil cannot circulate properly inside the transfer case to lubricate the internal bearings. Over time, the bearings can fail, which may cause the front or rear wheels to suddenly lock up while the vehicle is moving.
GM first became aware of the issue after receiving a report of a 2026 Silverado that experienced wheel lock-up in a parking lot. An engineering inspection confirmed the missing oil pickup tube. The company has received at least four field complaints connected to the condition so far.
The Risk
A sudden wheel lock-up can cause a driver to lose control of the vehicle, especially at highway speeds. Some drivers may hear grinding noises before the failure occurs, but GM notes that the lock-up can still happen without enough warning to react safely. No crashes or injuries have been reported in connection with this defect to date.
What Owners Should Do Right Now
The company is directing affected owners to stop driving the vehicle entirely until it has been inspected and repaired. GM will arrange towing to an authorized dealership at no cost if needed. Dealers have been instructed to inspect the transfer case assembly and replace it if required. All repairs will be performed free of charge.
Customer notification letters are expected to begin mailing by June 22, 2026. In the meantime, owners can check whether their specific vehicle is included by entering the VIN into the NHTSA recall lookup tool or GM’s recall lookup website
