Ford is issuing an auto defect recall for more than 130,000 pickup trucks to repair components that could have been broken due to another recent recall. Consumer Reports say the earlier recall was meant to fix a truck engine-block heater problem. In December, Ford recalled 410,289 full-sized pickup trucks because of fire risk from the engine-block heater. When water and dirt enter the block heater cable’s connector and lead to corrosion, there is a fire risk.
Details of the Recall
Ford is now saying that the pickups inspected as part of that previous recall could have had new damage to the block heater cable connectors, which could lead to problems, including the risk of fire. This safety risk only exists when the vehicle is parked and the block heater cable is connected to an electrical outlet, Ford said in a statement. Owners are urged not to use the engine-block heater cable.
Consumer Reports urges vehicle owners to get the recall repairs done immediately. While it might be inconvenient, it’s the right thing to do in the interest of safety – even if it’s the second recall they may be dealing with in a short period. To fix this most recent problem, dealerships will disable the vehicle’s engine-block heater cable by cutting off the plug end prongs and sealing the end cap with silicone sealant. Customers will be notified when the replacement cable is available.
Ford reports that there has been one known fire in the United States and one in Canada related to the prior recall work. Ford is not the only automaker facing problems stemming from recall repairs gone wrong. Nissan had to recall 341,000 Altima sedans again for an issue involving doors that won’t latch properly. Honda issued a recall in January for more than a million vehicles to replace the replacement Takata airbags.
Auto Product Liability Issues
Automakers have a responsibility to ensure that their vehicles are safe. When there is a safety problem, automakers must conduct repairs at no cost to consumers. In this case, the recall repairs went awry, causing more consumer problems. In such circumstances, auto manufacturers may be liable for any injuries brought on by vehicle flaws.
If you or a loved one has been injured or has suffered a loss due to these or other auto defects, you may be able to seek compensation for your injuries, damages and losses. Please get in touch with an experienced auto defect attorney to obtain more information about pursuing your legal rights.
