A group of student track athletes from Anaheim High School was struck by a car while waiting to cross the road at an intersection.
The teenage students, including boys and girls, were waiting at a traffic light on a practice run when a car swerved into them. Eight of the runners were hospitalized, and one of the victims is in critical condition.
Car Accident Involving Runners from Anaheim High School
The Anaheim High School athletes were on a training run when the pedestrian accident happened at about 3 pm on Wednesday, December 10. They were standing near the intersection of Harbor and North Street in Anaheim when a red Toyota sedan veered into them.
Witnesses said the teens were waiting on the sidewalk for the light to turn red and the ‘Walk’ sign to come on. They said the car drove straight across the intersection and did not slow down, veering right and jumping the curb. As it did so, it collided with the runners and crashed into a wall.
All of the runners are aged between 16 and 17 years old. They were taken to a nearby hospital, and one of the injured victims was listed in critical condition. However, authorities believe none of the injuries are life-threatening.
The track team’s coach was following the teens on a bicycle and witnessed the crash.
The driver of the car was a 27-year-old male. He was also hospitalized and was arrested by police at the hospital on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The investigation is ongoing.
Update 2:33 PM, December 11th: Police have identified 27-year-old Anthony Alva-Palafox as the suspect in a DUI crash that injured eight Anaheim High School track athletes during a practice run.
