Anaheim Attractions Create Personal Injury Risks for Attendees

Anaheim is the second largest city in Orange County with a population of approximately 330,000 people. Many of Anaheim's residents and visitors enjoy famous attractions like Disneyland and the Angels Baseball team at Edison Field. At times these events are "the happiest places on earth," and other times dangerous situations arise that put people at risk for personal injury.

Rowdy, Drunken Fans Endanger Lives

Since the death of Angel's pitcher Nick Adenhart in April of 2009, the Anaheim community has been mourning his loss and cracking down on reckless and drunken driving. Many fans attend Angel's games to support their team, drink beer, and have a good time. However, many of these inebriated fans continue to drive home after the game is over. Not only are they at risk for a DUI sentence, but they could harm many lives in fatal car accidents.

When many people are drinking in a high-energy environment, it is likely that issues could arise. Angel's spokesman Tim Mead says that occasional fights break out in the stands but unruly fans are dealt with quickly to ensure a safety. One fight on opening day in April 2009 saw the death of a man who attended the game at Angel's Stadium. The Angels played the A's and minutes after the game was over, this man was found on the fourth level of a stairwell, face-down and unconscious. He died from his injuries later in the hospital and two men were suspect. Witnesses said it began with a fight and the two men fled. Surveillance footage was released to police in order to try to find and identify the assailants.

Spokesman Mead assures that this fight was truly a rare event and that games are always staffed with around 50 security guards and police officers. Yet, even as fans leave the stadium, there are drunken issues in the parking lots. A certain parking lot was beginning to attract post-game fans who wanted to hang out and party. The police and security have been working to shut these situations down, too, as the atmosphere promotes risky behavior. In fact, according to the Orange County Register, after Adenhart's death in the car accident caused by a drunk driver hit-and-run, the police department has distributed a news release asking motorists to avoid the Angel's Stadium area entirely during peak traffic time unless they are attending the game. Cutting down on traffic and crowds could help prevent a whole range of accidents.

Dirty Stadium Creates Health Hazard

Angel's Stadium has also seen another issue in the last few years: In 2005, they received 118 vermin violations. The Stadium previously had a policy allowing that refuse would be left on the ground for 12 or more hours after a game until a morning maintenance team would clean. The Orange County Health Care Agency issued the violations, promoting a change of policy.

Any Anaheim foodborne illness attorney will tell you that these violations are hazardous to public health. To ameliorate the situation, Angel's stadium now has cleaning crews ready 3 hours after the start of every game. Greg Smith, the city's executive director of convention, sports and entertainment, said, "We feel the reputation of the city as providing a clean and safe environment is extremely valuable for the success of our Anaheim destination."
