California Actos Lawyers
Our Actos lawyers in California have seen an increase in Actos patients coming forward with very serious injuries. In what is quickly becoming a products liability disaster, these defective drugs have been linked to aggressive forms of cancer as well as an increased risk of bone fractures. Due to the lack of information being distributed to those who take this defective medication, our attorneys believe substantially more victims are out there, but they are unaware that their injuries are due to Actos.
Actos (pioglitazone) is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and was designed to treat diabetes mellitus type 2 in combination with other medications. In 2008, Actos was the tenth-best selling medication in the U.S. exceeding $2.4 billion, but their financial success hid the frightening implications uncovered by some studies. Pioglitazone has since been found to be associated with bladder tumors and has actually been banned in some countries. As more evidence continues to surface, the future for Actos victims seems to be getting worse, but this has yet to spur the FDA into issuing a full recall of this defective product.
Actos Side Effects
The use of Actos has been linked to a number of injuries, but only a few are being deemed as life threatening. The following are Actos side effects for which medical attention should be sought immediately.
- Abnormal fatigue
- Dilated neck veins
- Decreased urine output
- Substantial weight gain
- Chest tightness or pain
- Irregular breathing
The US Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) approved Actos in July of 1999, but this was well before studies had surfaced which linked Actos to dangerous illnesses. Not long after Actos was approved, a number of patients who were prescribed the drug suffered congestive heart failure. These instances spurred the American Diabetes Association into issuing warnings of an increased risk of developing congestive heart failure in diabetics with kidney problems or heart disease who take Actos.
Jules Berck Claims Compensation From Actos Manufacturers
Jules Berck, a California Actos patient, is claiming damages from the manufacturers of Actos after taking the defective medication for only two years. Jules alleges that Actos was responsible for his bladder cancer and that Takeda Manufacturers (the makers of Actos) had an obligation to warn him of these risks. Jules goes on to say that had the manufacturers of Actos fully informed him of the risks he would be taking by using their medication, he would have chosen to treat his diabetes using alternative methods. The FDA analyzed data from the first five years of a 10-year Actos safety study Takeda begun in 2002 and concluded that the risk of bladder cancer was 40 percent higher for patients taking Actos for at least a year.
