A 17-year-old girl in Newberry Springs, San Bernardino County, was severely mauled by a pack of more than 10 large-breed dogs while jogging on July 17.
She suffered extensive injuries, including significant cuts, abrasions, and torn flesh, requiring over 500 stitches and hospitalization; her injuries left her temporarily unable to walk on her own. Her mother said she didn’t even recognize her after the attack, and she thought her arms had been torn off.

A local neighbor rescued her, calling 911, and authorities later seized 16 unfenced and unleashed dogs from a resident’s property. The horrific attack prompted a criminal investigation.
Stray Dogs Attack Kills 51-Year-Old Woman
Two weeks later, on July 31, a 51-year-old woman died, and another person was injured after a separate pack of stray dogs attacked them in a San Bernardino park; officers were forced to shoot at the dogs during that incident.
Both attacks highlight an ongoing community concern about stray and uncontrolled dogs roaming the area and the risks they pose to public safety.
Underlying Causes of Dog Attacks
Many stray dogs originate from homeless encampments, where they are often kept for protection. Overcrowded shelters and increasing abandonment leave many animals on their own. Backyard breeders, where dogs are often mistreated and unsupervised, also cause these attacks, and responsible breeding and training are necessary to curb animal attacks in California.
Fundraising and Public Help are Needed
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with her recovery, and according to People magazine, she is plagued by nightmares of the horrific attack. Anyone with information on the dog attack is urged to call the Barstow Sheriff at 760-995-8788.
Dog Bite Liability in California
Even if the dog is roaming freely, dog owners in California bear responsibility for any injuries caused by an attack. A San Bernardino dog bite lawyer can discuss the rights of the victims in these attacks, including compensation for medical bills and pain and suffering.
