Owners of the new Ford F-150 and Ranger trucks might need to bring their cars in for a vehicle defect recall repair. According to Consumer Reports, the dashboard display could state that the vehicle is in “park” even if it is in “reverse,” “neutral” or “drive.” If that happens and a driver takes his or her foot off the brake or exits the car, there is a risk that the vehicle could roll away.

Why the Vehicles Were Recalled

The shifter assembly may have been improperly installed.  The defective auto part would allow the shifter to move into a position that is different from the one that is displayed on the dashboard. According to documents filed by Ford with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), if this problem occurs, drivers may notice a warning on the dashboard display or warning chime. Also, the vehicle may not start. This recall only involves vehicles with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ford has said it is not aware of any car accidents or injuries related to this issue. When the recall begins on April 27, Ford dealers will check the vehicles to make sure the part has been properly installed and reinstall it if necessary, at no cost to consumers. This recall includes about 50,000 Ford F-150 pickup trucks made between Feb. 18 and March 19; 5,200 Ford Ranger pickup trucks made between Feb. 28 and March 18; and 43 Ford Expedition SUVs with the Police Package option made between March 3 and March 19. If your vehicle is included in this recall, it is crucial that you get it repaired. Under federal law, automakers are required to repair your vehicle at no cost. If they are, ask them about the sanitizing measures they have in place.

If you are an essential worker or need to use your vehicle for grocery shopping or other necessary activities, make sure you repair the vehicle before you drive it. Sanitize your vehicle after you get it back from the dealership and adopt social distancing measures.
