The Los Angeles Police Department is urging motorists to slow down as speeding-related crashes continue to rise in the city amid the coronavirus pandemic. According to a KTLA news report, the vast majority of the more than 6,500 car accidents reported in the city thus far in 2020, have involved excessive speeds. That is a higher number compared to the same period last year, officials say. However, they noted that to date, there have been fewer deadlier crashes with 150 deaths reported this year. The city of Santa Ana is pushing back on street racing, which has become a scourge all around Southern California as more racers are taking to public roadways that have become relatively empty because of coronavirus-related shutdowns. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Santa Ana police are working on an initiative that would penalize both drivers who are speeding and people who gather around to watch them. Police are probing a possible drunk driving case involving a Tesla driver in Arizona who said he was using the automaker’s controversial Autopilot system when his sedan crashed into an unoccupied police vehicle, which in turn hit an ambulance. According to a report in The Mercury News, the crash occurred July 14 on an Arizona highway. Research from UC Davis is suggesting that policymakers should pay a little more attention to the issue of distracted driving in partially automated vehicles. According to a Streetsblog.com report, a study by researchers at the Plug-In Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Research Center at ITS-Davis found that people who drive Tesla vehicles that are equipped with the company’s Autopilot software tend to drive more than they did before they had the software.
