Cannondale Bicycles Recalled After Broken Part is Linked to One Death and Several Injuries

Bicycle Accident Deaths in California Hit 25-Year High

Cannondale Cyclocross CAADX bicycle are being recalled after one person died and several others were injured because of a broken part. According to a CBS 13 news report, the fork can fracture on these bicycles causing riders to fall. One person died from his injuries. Ten other incidents have been reported worldwide including five in the United States. Seven of the reported incidents involved serious injuries including concussions and spinal cord injury.

Details of the Recall

Cannondale and several independent groups tested the bicycles and said they did not find a defect in the forks. But Cannondale is offering bike owners free upgraded replacement forks. The recalled bicycles were sold from August 2012 to August 2017 at authorized Cannondale retailers for between $1,000 and $2,000. The recall involves 9,700 Cannondale CAADX Cyclocross bicycles, including model years 2013 to 2016. The bicycles which combine off- and on-road cycling come in a variety of colors and configurations.

Here are some of the things to look for in recalled bicycles. The bicycle has a prominent CAADX marking on the top tube or other location. The recalled bikes have disc brakes. The inside of the fork leg has a large “ULTRAX” marking. Also, the cable running to the front disc brake is outside of the fork as opposed to inside the fork. Customers with bikes meeting the criteria should contract an authorized Cannondale dealer to get a replacement fork.

Product Liability Issues

Based on news reports, it appears that these bicycles have the potential to cause significant injuries or even fatalities. Falls from bicycles could result in major injuries including head injuries, spinal cord trauma, neck injuries, compound fractures and internal organ injuries. If you own one of these bicycles, it is important that you get the free upgraded replacement forks right away. Do not use your bicycle without these new forks.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries as a result of these recalled bicycles, it is important that you contact an experienced product defect lawyer to better understand your legal rights and options.
