Specialized Recalls Sirrus Bicycles for Injury Hazard

Haro Recalls Masi Bicycles for Fall and Injury Hazards

Specialized has recalled around 36,000 Sirrus bicycles (2019-2020 model years) after seven people suffered injuries when the crank arm disengaged. According to an alert issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall includes Sirrus, Sirrus X, and Sirrus Sport Bicycles with alloy crank arms. The problem with these bicycles is that the crank arm can suddenly disengage and cause the rider to lose control, which poses fall and injury hazards.

Reports of Injuries

So far, Specialized says it has received 56 incident reports of the crank arm disengaging, including seven reports of injuries. One person suffered a torn bicep tendon. The other six injuries were minor such as road rash. The recalled bicycles were sold at authorized Specialized retailers nationwide and online from September 2018 to June 2020 for $850 to $1,700. Consumers who have these bicycles are urged to stop using them right away and contact their nearest authorized Specialized retailer for a free repair. For more information, call Specialized at 1-800-722-4423.

Product Liability Issues

Based on news reports, it appears that these bicycles have the potential to cause significant injuries or even fatalities. We often hear or read about horrific bicycle versus vehicle collisions that result in major injuries or fatalities. But, it is also a fact that a number of bicycle accidents are caused by defective bicycles or faulty parts. Here are some of the common injuries caused by defective bicycles or bicycle parts:

  • Traumatic brain injuries: When a bicyclist falls to the ground and hits the pavement or any other object, there is the danger of suffering a traumatic brain injury. These types of injuries can result in long-term or even lifelong disabilities. Brain injuries also often require costly and lengthy rehabilitative treatment.
  • Back and neck injuries: These largely affect the spinal cord. A serious spinal injury could result in paralysis. A serious injury can also leave the victim with severe pain and mobility issues.
  • Fractures: Broken bones are an example of another type of common injury sustained in bicycle accidents involving falls. Fractures may also require lengthy therapy to help the victim recover some of the lost strength and mobility in the affected parts of the body.

Suppose you or a loved one has suffered injuries as a result of these recalled bicycles. In that case, it is important that you contact an experienced product defect lawyer to understand your legal rights and options better. You may be able to receive compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
