Ram Recalls 222,410 Trucks over Defective Diesel Fuel Pumps

A Ram recall has been issued for about 222,410 Ram 2500- and 3500-series cab-chassis trucks in the U.S. because of a defect inside the high-pressure fuel pumps of certain 2019 and 2020 Ram heavy-duty trucks.

According to CNET, the recalled trucks are equipped with the company’s 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine. The issue could cause premature wear and lead to dangerous engine issues.

Details of the Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was investigating this issue earlier this year. The recall campaign came about after Ram engineers noticed an increase in warranty claims for the issue. This led to an internal investigation and now a voluntary recall filing with NHTSA. The problem essentially stems from a defect in the pump’s construction that leads to premature wear, which in turn leads to metal shavings entering the Cummins engine’s highly sensitive fuel system. This could cause the vehicle’s engine to stall or simply not start.

The recall fix will likely involve the replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump and reprogramming of the powertrain control module’s software. Ram dealers will perform this work at no cost to vehicle owners. Ram will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles by Jan. 1. Those with questions or concerns are urged to reach out to Ram’s customer service department at 1-800-853-1403.

Ram has said it doesn’t know of any injuries relating to the defect. The automaker has also said that the decision to recall the defective pumps was made independently of NHTSA’s investigation because the company’s defect determination process began even before the NHTSA inquiry was announced, officials said.

Auto Product Liability Issues

If you have been injured due to a vehicle defect, whether or not the vehicle is part of a recall, you may receive compensation for your injuries, damages, and losses. Injured victims can file an auto product liability lawsuit seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost income, death, and pain and suffering.

If you have lost a loved one as the result of an auto defect, you may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation as well. An experienced auto defect lawyer can help injured victims and families that have lost loved ones to defective automobiles secure justice and fair compensation for their losses.
