A 2-year-old girl in Virginia suffered severe burn injuries after a pressure cooker exploded in her family’s kitchen. According to a report in The Destin Log, the accident occurred when Addie Mae Davis stood next to her mother, Bethany Davis. The pressure cooker was a gift the family recently received, but it had been used before, according to the girl’s mother. The family said Bethany Davis was cooking chicken for dinner and began venting the cooker.
Severe Burn Injuries
When she returned 30 minutes later, the cooker appeared to have been vented and ready to be opened. But, as soon as she opened it, it exploded. Addie Mae was sent to a pediatric intensive care unit at a nearby hospital. The 2-year-old sustained first-, second- and third-degree burn injuries to her face and body. Her mother also suffered burns to her chest.
The family reportedly did not have health insurance to cover the medical bills because the child’s father was between jobs. They’ve started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Addie Mae’s treatment. The girl is improving and expected to be released from the hospital. They are waiting to find out if she will suffer scarring or require surgery in the future.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Addie Mae and her family. We wish the child a speedy and complete recovery.
Defective Pressure Cookers
Based on this news report, it is not clear what brand of pressure cooker this particular family was using. Pressure cooker explosions are more common than we know, though. While some users are fortunate enough to escape injuries, others are not. Recently, we’ve also seen many product recalls involving popular electric pressure cooker models, such as the Instant Pot being recalled for overheating.
Product manufacturers have a duty and an obligation to make safe items for consumers to use. If a dangerous or defective product has injured you or a loved one, you may be able to file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer, seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. An experienced product defect lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and help them secure maximum compensation for their losses.
