Hyundai Recalls Cars with Parking Assist Feature for Software Error

Kona EV Owners Say Hyundai is Not Handling Battery Recall for Fire Danger

Hyundai is issuing an auto defect recall for vehicles that are equipped with its highly publicized smart parking system. According to Consumer Reports, the recall will repair a software error that could allow a vehicle to keep moving even if the system malfunctions. This feature, called Remote Smart Parking Assist, is only available on some 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited and Hyundai Nexo vehicles.

Parking Assist Software Defect

The parking assist feature can essentially move the car forward or backward into or out of a perpendicular parking space with minor steering adjustments even when no driver is inside the vehicle. In order to work, it requires the operator to press a button on the key fob continuously. It cannot parallel park a vehicle.

The Remote Smart Parking Assist system in the recalled vehicles is equipped with a “fail safe” feature that prevents the car from moving if it detects a fault or error from its sensors. In some cases, however, this mode may not engage, and the vehicle will continue to move in its last commanded direction even if an error has been detected. This could potentially result in a car accident and injuries to vehicle occupants.

Details of the Recall

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the Korean automaker discovered the problem with the software during “routine developmental testing” in February and issued a software update for new vehicles going forward but did not recall vehicles that were already equipped with the software.

In March 2020, Hyundai got a report in Korea about a vehicle that continued to move without stopping while the smart parking feature was in use. This particular vehicle was equipped with the original defective software. Hyundai said no injuries occurred during this incident and that it is not aware of any car accidents or injuries related to the feature in the United States. Owners of vehicles affected by this recall should take them to a Hyundai dealer for a software update when the recall begins June 4.
