Honda Odyssey Minivans Recalled for Faulty Backup Camera and Door Handles

More than 536,000 Honda Odyssey minivans are being recalled over concerns that the backup camera may not display properly and that the power sliding doors in the vehicle may not latch properly, especially in freezing temperatures. According to Consumer Reports, water may get into the backup camera’s mounting holes for vehicles affected by this recall and enter the camera lens.

Details of the Recall

This could cause a distorted, delayed, or inoperative backup camera display. Also, if the backup camera’s view mode is set to “top-down view,” or switched from that view to another mode in a bright environment, the image may not display, according to Honda. A delayed or absent rear-view display when a vehicle is in reverse gear can increase the risk of a crash.

For the vehicles that have been affected by the power sliding door recall, Honda says water may enter the outer handles of the sliding doors and drip onto the cables connected to the door latch mechanisms. In freezing temperatures, ice may form on the cable, hindering proper cable movement and potentially preventing the door from latching.

An unlatched sliding door could open when the vehicle is in motion, increasing the chance of injuries to passengers, Honda says. The automaker says that so far there have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to either of these recalls.

The backup camera recall impacts 2019-2020 Odyssey minivans and the power sliding door recall affects 2018-2020 Odyssey minivans. Honda will notify owners of the affected vehicles. Both recalls are expected to begin on Sept. 23, 2020.

When the recall begins Honda dealerships will replace the backup camera with an updated unit and replace the power sliding door outer handle cables, free of charge. For more information, owners may call Honda’s customer service number at 1-888-234-2138.

Auto Product Liability Issues

When a vehicle’s backup camera doesn’t work, there is the potential for tragic accidents. There have been a number of accidents, many fatal, especially involving young children. Doors that don’t latch properly also have the potential to cause injuries, especially when doors open when the vehicle is in motion.

Honda has recalled these vehicles for other serious safety issues. If your vehicle has been affected, please take it to a dealership right away for free repairs.

If you or a loved one has been injured because of these or other auto defects, you may be able to seek compensation for the injuries, damages and losses you have suffered. An experienced auto defect lawyer can help you understand your legal rights and options better.
