Ford Recalls Pick Trucks for Defective Engine-Block Heater

Ford Recalls 600,000 Cars to Repair Hydraulic Defect That Could Cause Crashes

Ford is issuing an auto defect recall for more than 130,000 pickup trucks to repair components that could have been broken as the result of another recent recall. According to Consumer Reports, the earlier recall was meant to repair a problem with the trucks’ engine-block heater. In December, Ford recalled 410,289 full-sized pickup trucks because of fire risk from the engine-block heater. When water and dirt enter into the block heater cable’s connector and lead to corrosion, there is the risk of a fire.

Details of the Recall

Ford is now saying that the pickups that were inspected as part of that previous recall could have had new damage done to the block heater cable connectors, which could lead to problems including the risk for fire. This safety risk only exists when the vehicle is parked and the block heater cable is connected to an electrical outlet, Ford said in an issued statement. Owners are urged not to use the engine-block heater cable.

Consumer Reports is urging vehicle owners to get the recall repairs done right away. While it might be inconvenient, it’s the right thing to do in the interest of safety – even if it’s the second recall they may be dealing with in a short period of time. To fix this most recent problem, dealerships will disable the vehicle’s engine-block heater cable by cutting off the plug end prongs and sealing the end cap with silicone sealant. Customers will be notified when the replacement cable is available.

Ford reports that there has been one known fire in the United States and one in Canada related to the prior recall work. Ford is not the only automaker facing problems stemming from recall repairs gone wrong. Nissan had to recall 341,000 Altima sedans again for an issue involving doors that won’t latch properly. And Honda issued a recall in January for more than a million vehicles to replace the replacement Takata airbags.

Auto Product Liability Issues

Automakers have a responsibility to ensure that their vehicles are safe. When there is a problem involving safety, automakers are required to conduct repairs at no cost to consumers. In this particular case, the recall repairs went awry causing more problems for consumers. In such cases, auto manufacturers can be held liable for any injuries caused by vehicle defects.

If you or a loved one has been injured or has suffered a loss as a result of these or other auto defects, you may be able to seek compensation for your injuries, damages and losses. Please contact an experienced auto defect attorney to obtain more information about pursuing your legal rights.
