It is not clear what caused the truck crash, but Eyewitness News shows the vehicle completely crushed and mangled under the big rig.

The truck crash remains under investigation. We hope the driver of the car did not suffer catastrophic injuries in this truck underride crash. We wish them the very best for a quick and full recovery.

What is an Underride Truck Crash?

An underride accident occurs when a passenger vehicle slides under a larger vehicle, such as a tractor-trailer, during a collision. This usually causes severe intrusion into the passenger vehicle’s occupant space resulting in deadly injuries to occupants. Rear underride guards are metal bumpers hanging from trailers’ backs to prevent underride in a rear-impact crash.

Trailers on U.S. roads are required to have underride guards that meet federal safety standards. However, research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) showed that even guards that meet these standards could buckle or break off in a crash. IIHS’ testing program has recommended engineering improvements that go further.

In 2016, according to IIHS, 424 of the 2,056 passenger vehicle occupants killed in large truck crashes died when their vehicles struck the rear of a large truck. A 2010 IIHS analysis of a small sample of fatal crashes involving the rear of a truck found that 82% involved underride.
