Details of the Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on the 405 Freeway

A vehicle collided with a Caltrans truck at high speed on the San Diego-bound freeway in Irvine, near Orange County’s John Wayne Airport.

Emergency services were called to the MacArthur Boulevard on-ramp of the southbound 405 freeway at 10:42 pm. Orange County Fire Authority attended the scene, along with the California Highway Patrol.

They pronounced one victim dead at the scene of the accident. Four other people were injured in the crash and were taken to nearby hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately released.

Reports indicate that the vehicle involved in the accident was a white SUV. The vehicle was allegedly speeding and struck a Caltrans contractor’s truck, which may potentially have been stationary in a construction zone. One person in the SUV was pronounced dead, but it is unclear whether it was the driver or a passenger.

Several lanes of the freeway were closed overnight, including the transition road from the 55 freeway to the southbound 405. The closure affected early-morning commuter traffic on Friday, but all lanes reopened at about 7 am.

An investigation is ongoing.
