Thousands of Exploding Portable Speakers Recalled

About 41,000 portable speakers are being recalled after the company got reports of some of the speakers exploding. According to a Fox News report, Ion Audio LLC voluntarily recalled the speakers including its Sport Express Cornerstone, Cornerstone Glow and Keystone ION Audio speakers. These speakers reportedly have batteries that can leak hydrogen gas while they charge. This could cause the speakers to explode.

Details of the Portable Speakers Recall

Ion Audio imports the speakers from Shenzhen Fenda Technology Company. It has received five reports of explosions, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). From the portable speakers recall a reported four of the explosions took place that caused extensive property damage. However, the company has not received any reports of injuries.

The Sport Express speakers were sold at Best Buy from June 2018 through May 2019 for about $70, while the other speakers were sold at electronics stores around the country and online from March 2016 through March of this year. The Cornerstone speakers cost about $100 and the Keystone speakers were sold for about $200. CPSC is urging consumers to immediately stop using the recalled portable speakers and call Ion Audio for a refund. Consumers will get a gift card.

Dangerous and Defective Products

It appears that the portable speakers recall may have a manufacturing or design defect causing the batteries to leak hydrogen when they charge and trigger the explosion. These are products that have the potential not only to cause severe property damage, but also major injuries and loss of life. These products are reminiscent of the issues we’ve seen with lithium-ion batteries, which have the propensity to explode. We are representing individuals who have sustained burn injuries due to defective e-cigarette batteries. There have also been a number of cases of laptops and cell phones exploding and/or catching fire.

Manufacturers have a responsibility to make products that are safe for consumers. When they fail to do so and their faulty products cause injuries, they can be held accountable for it. If you have been injured by these or other defective products, you may be able to file a product liability claim seeking compensation for your injuries, damages and losses. An experienced product defect attorney can help you better understand your legal rights and options.
