Costco Recalls 70,000 Shower Benches Because They Can Collapse

Costco

Shower benches sold at Costco are being recalled after a number of consumers reported suffering injuries when the products collapsed during use. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 70,000 of the Ivena 20-inch teak shower benches, exclusively sold at the wholesale club, can collapse during use. A shower bench collapse accident could pose a fall and injury hazard to the user, creating a serious injury danger.

Recall Details

CPSC says there have been 81 reports of the benches collapsing, breaking during use, or falling apart, which have resulted in four injuries. Consumers reported injuries, including a fractured tailbone, persistent head and body aches, and significant bruising. Those with these benches are urged to immediately stop using them and return to Costco for a full refund.

CPSC has also said that Costco is contacting all of its customers directly. The product is made of light brown teak with padding on the feet. The recalled benches were originally sold at Costco locations nationwide and online from October 2018 through June 2021.

Falls Involving Older Adults

Older adults are the most common users of shower benches and stools. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are common among adults 65 and older. Every second of the day, a person 65 years or older suffers a fall in the United States, making falls the leading cause of injury and death in this age group.

CDC statistics also show that about 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for fall-related injury each year. One of every five falls causes an injury such as broken bones or a head injury. Each year, at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling — usually by falling sideways. Women fall more often than men, accounting for three-quarters of all hip fractures.

A fall in the shower could result in significant injuries for any age group but would be particularly dangerous for elderly consumers.

Product Liability Issues

If you have suffered fall-related injuries due to a defective product, you may be able to seek compensation for your injuries, damages, and losses. Injured victims can seek damages, including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. An experienced product defect lawyer can help victims, and their families better understand their legal rights and options.
