A 14-year-old girl was injured after she fell about 25 feet from a ride at the Six Flags amusement park in upstate New York. According to a CNN news report, the girl was not seriously injured and is said to be in stable condition. Officials said the girl, who was from Greenwood, Delaware, was on the Sky Ride, which is a slow gondola-style attraction. A video, that has gone viral now, shows the teenager hanging by her hands as a crowd gathers 25 feet below.

Ongoing Investigation

The video then shows the girl letting go, striking a tree branch and getting caught by people below in the crowd. The operator had stopped the ride after being told the rider was in distress. It is not clear how the girl got in that position. Employees at the park treated the girl before emergency crews arrived. She was taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to a regional medical center. Six Flags has said the ride will remain closed until they conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Government investigators also inspected the ride and the car in which the victim was riding. They have found everything to have been in proper working order and that all safety equipment was intact and operational at the time of the incident. Another child, who was in the car at the time, was not injured. A 47-year-old man was treated for a back injury he sustained as he tried to catch the teen.

Amusement Park Accidents

Thousands of children are hurt every year on amusement park rides. One study found that about 20 injuries occur daily at amusement parks from May through September, which is the peak season for these destinations. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), in 2014, 1,146 people sustained ride-related injuries with 111 of those classified as serious.

The number of ride-related injuries has exceeded 1,000 each year since 2001 when the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions began sponsoring the NSC survey. The lowest number of injuries was in 2009 at 1,086, with 65 serious injuries while the highest was 1,954 in 2003 with 106 serious injuries.

If You Have Been Injured

Amusement parks have a duty and a legal obligation to ensure the safety of guests and visitors. Injured victims of amusement park accidents can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact a knowledgeable personal injury attorney who has experience handling similar cases successfully.
