Twinkies and Palmer Candy Recall Products for Salmonella Contamination

If you have any of those holiday Twinkies left over in your shelf, you better check them again. According to a CNN news report, Hostess, which makes these popular sweet snacks, has issued a recall for the limited-edition Holiday White Peppermint Hostess Twinkies for possible salmonella contamination. The recalled products are multi-pack boxes with nine cakes in each. The recall comes in response to another announcement by Blommer Chocolate Company, which produced the confectionery coating used on the holiday Twinkies. The coating contains milk powder ingredients produced by Valley Milk Products, which may be tainted with salmonella bacteria.

The bacteria were apparently detected that the company’s manufacturing facility including in 50-pound bags of Valley Milk sweet cream buttermilk powder and high heat nonfat dairy milk powder. Consumers who still have these products at home are asked to discard them or return them to the store for a refund. Palmer Candy Company has also issued a recall for a number of chocolate products including chocolate-covered pretzels, almond, peppermint bark and candy party bowls. The recalled products have been shipped nationwide, officials said. So far, officials haven’t received any reports of illnesses as a result of these products.

Salmonella Symptoms and Effects

Some of the most common symptoms of a salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Many people who are exposed to the bacteria recover, even without treatment. However, there are also many cases where patients require hospitalization. The young, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are more vulnerable to severe infections. Even healthy individuals sometimes are left with long-term health consequences as a result of such food poisoning.
