Sideshows are Dangerous
The injury incidents happened at a sideshow in San Jose. Sideshows are illegal gatherings where groups of drivers take over intersections, city streets, parking lots, or stretches of busy freeways to do various tricks with their cars, such as doughnuts or figure eights. Crowds of spectators for these shows can soar into the hundreds, blocking traffic lanes in many instances. Some sideshows go on for hours and are often cleared out by the police.
There is no question that this is an extremely dangerous activity because they involve speed and stunts that can go awry. The drivers are not just putting themselves at risk but also others, such as passengers and spectators. Sideshow spectators have been seriously injured or even killed by vehicles that lost control. Such gatherings increased even more during the pandemic when streets were empty due to lockdowns.
