Pack of Unleashed Dogs Attacks Residents in Tarzana Neighborhood

Will Your Renters Insurance Policy Cover Dog Bites?

Residents in a Tarzana neighborhood have complained to officials that they have been terrorized by a pack of large and aggressive dogs.

According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, cell phone video captured a moment when a group of cane corso dogs, a large mastiff breed, attacked a woman on the night of Sept. 18. Two neighbors rushed to help her, but not before she was bitten twice.

One of the wounds left her with swelling and bruising on her upper thigh. Residents say they have been complaining about the aggressive dogs for years.

Reports of Other Attacks

The victim, identified by CBS as Lenay Golden, said she was extremely frightened and was hoping the dogs did not jump on her back. Neighbors said the dog attack against Golden was not an isolated event. The same dogs have “tormented” the neighborhood for the last five years, said another neighbor who did not want to be identified. Yet another resident said the mastiffs attacked him and his dog back in 2015. Even though he complained to the authorities, he said, nothing changed.

The owner of the dogs did not want to speak on camera but told CBS in a text message that he intends to comply with the law if anyone was bitten and also said his dogs let people pet them and play with other dogs in the neighborhood. Animal Services officials have said that the dogs will be quarantined for now. It’s not clear what would happen after that.

Liability Issues

California has a strict liability statute when it comes to dog bites and dog attacks. Even though administrative procedures vary by city or county, victims of dog attacks can seek compensation from the dog owner for their injuries, damages, and losses.

California’s Civil Code Section 3342 states: “The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.”

In such cases, victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, cosmetic surgeries, psychological counseling, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. An experienced Los Angeles dog bite lawyer can provide victims and families with more information regarding their legal rights.
