One Person Killed, Four Injured in Van Accident on San Diego Freeway

car accident

One Navy sailor was killed and four others were injured in a San Diego freeway crash the morning of June 3. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the crash occurred as the sailors, one woman and four men, were returning to San Diego from training at Camp Billy Machen, a desert training facility in Imperial County.

Accident Investigation Ongoing

The sailors’ Chevrolet Express van was headed west toward San Diego when it veered north off the freeway near Carrizo Gorge Road, California Highway Patrol officials said. The van went down a dirt embankment and slammed into a large boulder. A man seated in the middle rear of the van died at the scene.

Three of the van’s occupants suffered critical injuries and were transported to hospitals in San Diego. A fourth person suffered what were described as “moderate” injuries. Two of the sailors were in critical but stable condition, officials said. CHP investigators are trying to determine where the van’s occupants were sitting at the time of the crash and whether they were buckled up.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased victim. We also wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Causes and Compensation Issues

Based on this news report, it is not clear why the Chevy Express van veered off the roadway. There are a number of questions here. Was the driver of the van impaired, distracted, fatigued or otherwise negligent? Was there a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction that caused the vehicle to go off the road? Was tire defect a factor? Did the seatbelts in the vehicle work as intended? We trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

If a vehicle defect caused the accident, the vehicle’s manufacturer and/or the manufacturer of the defective product can be held liable for the injuries and losses caused. It is important in such cases that victims and families of deceased victims contact an experienced San Diego car accident lawyer who will be able to determine fault and liability and help them pursue their legal rights.
