NHTSA Investigates Chrysler Town & Country Charging Hub Fires

An investigation has been launched over potentially dangerous charging hub fires in Chrysler minivans. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the 2014 Chrysler Town & Country after reports of fires starting in the minivans’ interiors. According to a report, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) said in a document that three fires have started “at the charging hub mounted in the trim panel located on the driver’s side of the vehicle, between the second- and third-row seating.”

Details of the Probe

While NHTSA believes this component is the likely cause of these reported charging hub fires, the opening evaluation of the investigations aims to determine the specific area where the fires began. There is no current recall for the minivans at this time. A recall will only happen if NHTSA discovers a safety-related issue.

If the investigation unearths a defect, NHTSA may move to request that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalls the minivans. FCA may also provide its own evidence and voluntarily recall the vehicles. However, the investigation could also dive deeper depending on what engineers find in the first phase. FCA has said it is fully cooperating with NHSA’s investigation and that customers with concerns may contact their dealers. More information is expected to follow once NHTSA concludes the first phase of its investigation.
