Motorcyclist Killed in Suspected DUI Crash in North Las Vegas

Police tape blocking accident scene

A man suffered fatal injuries in a Las Vegas motorcycle accident and suspected DUI crash on the morning of April 9.

According to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, North Las Vegas police officers responded to the intersection of Ann Road and Allen Lane, where there had been a collision between a motorcycle and a sedan. A preliminary investigation showed that the sedan driver drove northbound on Allen Lane through a red light at a high rate of speed.

DUI Crash: Violation of Laws

The motorcyclist, traveling westbound on Ann Road, went through the intersection on a green light when he was struck by the sedan in a DUI crash. The motorcyclist, who officials said was a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the sedan, 29-year-old Thomas Munoz Jr., was arrested and booked on suspicion of driving while impaired resulting in death, failure to follow traffic lights, reckless driving, failure to render aid, and not wearing a seatbelt. The victim’s name has not been released yet.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of this deceased motorcyclist. We will hold them in our thoughts and prayers.

Based on this news report, the driver violated several laws. According to officials, he was driving the vehicle while under the influence, but also speeding and ran through the red light at the intersection striking the motorcyclist who was riding through the intersection with the green light.

Liability Issues

In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is apparent, families of deceased accident victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault parties seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses (incurred by the decedent), funeral costs, pain and suffering (endured by the deceased before he or she died), and loss of support, companionship, and consortium. In some cases, other parties may also be held liable. For example, if the at-fault driver was on the job at the time of the crash, their employer may also be held accountable.

In the case of a DUI crash like this, families of deceased victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Las Vegas motorcycle accident lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
