Fabian Zepeda, 27, was killed after he was decapitated by low-hanging cable after a car crashed into a power pole leaving the cable hanging across the street. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal accident occurred the morning of April 11, 2017 on Adams Street in San Bernardino. Police said the incident began when a man driving a Ford Taurus south on Adams just north of Macy Street, lost control of his vehicle, struck a mailbox and drove across a home’s yard.
The car then continued down Adams and knocked down a utility pole, sending the wires across the roadway. A few minutes later, Zepeda, also traveling south, drove into the path of the wire. He was decapitated on impact and knocked off the motorcycle. The motorcycle continued south and crashed at Highland Avenue. Officials are still looking into what caused the driver of the Taurus to lose control of the vehicle. Criminal charges may be filed in the case after a review by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family members of Fabian Zepeda, particularly his wife, who is apparently expecting their child. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
San Bernardino Motorcycle Accidents
According to the California Highway Patrol’s 2013 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were four fatalities and 61 injuries reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in the city of San Bernardino. Countywide, 32 people died and 525 were injured due to motorcycle accidents during the same year.
Fault and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it appears that the wires got in Zepeda’s way because of the prior accident involving the Ford Taurus. Officials are still looking into what may have caused the initial crash. They are also looking into whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In such cases, the at-fault or negligent parties, in addition to facing criminal charges, could also be held financially responsible for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Families of deceased victims can file what is known as a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love, care and companionship. An experienced San Bernardino motorcycle accident lawyer can help victims’ families in such cases better understand their legal rights and options.
