Mazda has issued an auto defect recall for 35, 390 2019-2020 Mazda3 sedans and hatchbacks because the automatic emergency braking system may inadvertently deploy. According to Autoblog.com, the affected vehicles may “unexpectedly stop while driving” because the Smart Braking System, which is the emergency braking system in these vehicles, could inadvertently activate.
Details of the Recall
The programming of the system’s software could cause Mazda3 to falsely detect an obstacle in front of the vehicle while driving. In response to that detection, the software may automatically apply the brakes in spite of no collision being imminent. This could be dangerous for the driver and those around the vehicle. There is, of course, an increased risk of a car accident if the brakes deploy suddenly. So far, Mazda says no injuries or fatalities have been reported as a result of this auto defect.
Vehicle owners who own these cars are warned to look out for an audible alarm and a warning message that will apply in the instrument cluster and head-up display when the car is about to perform an emergency stop. Mazda says it has reported the defect to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but it hasn’t been posted on the site.
Vehicles with early build dates will need to have the whole instrument cluster replaced or reprogrammed. These early build cars will also receive a new owner’s manual to reflect the revised procedure of temporary manual deactivation of the system. Later cars will only need the Smart Braking System software reprogrammed with an improved version. Vehicles owners should receive notifications in the mail about this recall by Feb. 17, 2020.
