Costco has issued a recall for massagers sold exclusively in their stores for a potential fire hazard. According to a news report, Massimo Motor Sports recalled all models of their Percussion Massage Guns. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued an alert saying that the products sold exclusively on Costco’s website from April to May 2020 were being recalled for this issue.
Details of the Recall
CPSC stated that Massimo had to recall about 12,360 massagers. The products have a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery system that could overheat and cause a fire. So far, Massimo has received three reports of fires with the recalled massage guns that resulted in more than $15,000 in property damage.
No injuries have been reported so far. The recalled massagers were all marked with the model number EM003 and sold in four colors – black, silver, gold and blue. If you have one of these recalled massagers at home CPSC is urging that you stop using them right away and contact Massimo for a full refund.
Lithium Batteries and Product Liability
This is of course not the first time our product defect lawyers have heard about lithium-ion batteries overheating and exploding or causing a fire. We’ve seen horrific incidents where products have ignited and caused serious injuries and even fatalities because of a lithium-ion battery that overheated and caught fire. We’ve seen injuries relating to products such as e-cigarettes or vaporizers, hoverboards, cell phones and laptops, just to name a few.
Often, these incidents occur because of defective lithium batteries manufactured with cheap or substandard parts. There is no question that these defective products have the potential to cause significant property damage and burn injuries that could lead to disfigurement and lifelong disabilities.
If you have been injured by a defective lithium-ion battery, you may be able to seek compensation for your damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation and pain and suffering. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced product defect attorney who will help them secure maximum compensation for their injuries, damages and losses, and hold the at-fault parties accountable.
