Lipodrene Weight Loss Supplements Recalled for Illegal Ingredient Linked to Heart Attacks

Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals has recalled Lipodrene with 25-mg Ephedra Extract Dietary supplements because of an illegal stimulant, 1,4-dimethylamylamine (DMAA), which has been linked to heart attacks. According to a recall notice issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recalled lots (expiration date 12/25) were purchased and distributed nationwide in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Details of the Recall

According to the FDA, DMAA is an illegal ingredient that is dangerous because it can narrow blood vessels and arteries and cause a corresponding rise in blood pressure or other cardiovascular issues. Potential risks include shortness of breath, abnormal heartbeat, high blood pressure, tightness in the chest, or heart attack. So far, no injuries or illnesses have been reported.

The voluntary recall was issued after FDA tests were positive for DMAA. High-Tech is offering a free replacement from a different lot. Retailers with these products have already been instructed to remove them from the shelves and return them to Hi-Tech immediately.

Wholesalers or distributors should alert their customers to the recall and have them return any product back to the place of purchase or Hi-Tech. For more information, call 1-888-855-7919. If you have suffered any adverse health effects from these products, you should report them to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online or via regular mail or fax.

Why DMAA is Dangerous

DMAA works by stimulating the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. This increases heart rate breathing rate, and causes a constriction of blood vessels. It gives users intense focus, increased energy, alertness, and strength. Experts have said that in people’s bodies, DMAA acts like adrenaline, normally produced during stress. Therefore, this unnatural adrenaline stimulation could increase stress on the heart and body.

If you or a loved one has suffered adverse health effects as a result of using these or other health supplements, you may be able to receive compensation for your injuries, damages, and losses. An experienced product defect lawyer can help you understand your legal rights and options better.
