Leisure Time Recalls Thousands of Swing Sets for Potential Injury Hazards
Leisure Time Products has recalled more than 9,000 A-frame swing sets because of an injury hazard. According to an alert issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall involves Backyard Discovery Big Brutus, Little Brutus, and Mini Brutus metal A-frame swing sets that were manufactured between March 2019 and July 2020.
Details of the Recall
According to the recall notice, the attachment that connects the swing hanger to the top tube can fail posing an injury hazard to users. So far, no injuries were reported. But, Leisure Time has said it has received three reports of the swing hanger attachment failing, which resulted in one side of the swing falling.
These recalled products were sold online at Amazon.com, backyarddiscovery.com, Homedepot.com, Lowes.com, Wayfair.com, and other online retailers from May 2019 through January 2021 for between $400 and $570, depending on the model. Leisure Time Products is asking consumers who have these products to immediately stop using them and contact the company for a free repair kit. Falls Can Be Serious
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), playground injuries send more than 200,000 children in the United States to the emergency room each year. And every year, about 15 playground accidents turn fatal. Falls are by far the leading cause of playground injuries. Falls can also be serious. Broken bones, concussions, and paralysis are possible outcomes when a child falls.
A recent survey of children brought to emergency rooms found that children hurt in playground falls were more likely than children in car accidents to suffer moderate to severe injuries. The severity of a fall typically depends on the height of the fall and the resistance of the landing surface. Studies have shown that children who fall from 5 feet or higher are twice as likely to be seriously injured as children who take shorter plunges.
