A horseback rider was severely injured in a Riverside car accident after he and his horse were hit by an SUV the night of May 6.
According to a report in The Press-Enterprise, the major injury collision occurred on Wells Avenue near Kent Avenue in the Arlanza neighborhood. Riverside police said the SUV was traveling east on Wells Avenue when the horse and rider walked out in front of it, leading to the collision.
Horseback Rider Suffered Serious Injuries
Officers arrived and found the male horseback rider unresponsive in the roadway with major injuries. The horse sustained minor injuries and was eventually walked back to its owner’s home by a Riverside officer. The rider was hospitalized in critical condition. Police said his injuries were probably more from the fall than the actual collision. The driver of the SUV, a 44-year-old Riverside woman, remained at the crash site and cooperated with police.
A passenger in the SUV suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No further information was available about the rider. It is not known if alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision. Officials also said they don’t believe the driver of the SUV was speeding at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
