Honda and Acura Vehicles Recalled for Brake Defects

By Brian Chase on June 25, 2013 - No comments

Honda is issuing a voluntary auto safety recall for certain 2006 model year Acura RSX cars and 2006 and 2007 S2000 sports cars for potential brake defects. According to a report in The Car Connection, about 18,400 vehicles have been included in this recall. The Acura vehicles involved in this recall were built from January 18, 2006 through August 12, 2006, while the Honda vehicles were manufactured from January through November 2006.

Issue with Brakes

According to a safety bulletin issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue is that the brake booster may not be able to maintain a vacuum when the brake pedal is depressed, thus decreasing the brake assist. A notice on Honda’s website attributes the problem to a manufacturing error in the power brake system components, allowing them to be produced outside of specification. This problem could potentially cause decreased brake assistance over time, increasing the risk of a crash. Honda will notify owners when the recall begins. Dealers will inspect the brake booster assembly and replace it if needed. The service will be done at no charge to consumers.

The Danger of Brake Defects

All vehicles rely on some form of braking system to slow down or stop, when necessary. However, when brakes fail or are not effective, drivers and passengers are at an increased risk of being involved in a serious injury crash. Vehicle owners need to ensure that their brakes are properly maintained. Some common sources of brake failure include damaged or worn brake pads, brake parts that are not properly installed, rusted or leaking brake lines or brake parts that have a manufacturing defect.

Auto Product Liability Issues

Anyone who has suffered injuries as a result of brake defects or any other auto defect can file a product liability claim against the automaker or the manufacturer of the defective product. Whether the defect was the result of flawed production or design, automakers can be held financially responsible for victims’ losses. Manufacturers have a legal responsibility to make products that are safe for consumers. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Victims or families that have lost loved ones as a result of auto defects would be well advised to contact an experienced auto product liability lawyer who has successfully handled claims against large automakers.
