Herbal Products Possibly Contaminated by Lethal Bacteria Are Recalled

For the second time in one week, WishGarden Herbs has recalled two products because they could be contaminated with a deadly type of bacteria. According to a notice posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website, the potential problem with Cord Care Powder and Goldseal Powder, just as with the previously recalled Happy Ducts Compress, is a “supply chain issue.”

Potentially Deadly Side Effects

When contaminated with the Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria, the company says the products could cause serious infections with severe outcomes including death, especially in infants and vulnerable patients with compromised immune systems. Both Cord Care and Goldenseal powders, which are used to dry umbilical cords, come in 1-ounce containers and are rubbed on the skin. If you have either of the recalled cord powders at home, do not use them.

Consumers can get a full refund for these products by mailing them to WishGarden Herbs, 321, S. Taylor Ave. Suite 100 Louisville, CO 80027. If you suffer from a medical problem from these or any other drugs, contact a medical professional for help. Then, report the problem to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program either via the FDA website or by a form obtained by calling 1-800-332-1088.

Earlier this year, Goldenseal Root Powder sold on Amazon.com was recalled after a baby died from an infection when the powder was used on the child’s umbilical cord. In that case, Maison Terre recalled all lots of its Organic Goldenseal Root Powder because of a risk of severe infections, surgery and death.

Product Liability Issues

Goldenseal is an herb whose dried root is used to make medicine to treat several conditions from the common cold to diarrhea to internal bleeding and cancer. However, there is not enough scientific evidence to determine whether or not it is an effective treatment for any of these conditions. According to medical professionals, using goldenseal during pregnancy or breastfeeding could be unsafe for infants.

If you or your child has been affected by these dangerous products, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your losses. Drug companies are required to manufacture products that are safe for consumers. With drugs, testing is critical. If you have lost a loved one as the result of these products, you may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit as well. An experienced product defect attorney will be able to advise you regarding your legal rights and options.
