Graco has issued a product defect recall for nearly 40,000 high chairs after five toddlers were injured when the chairs tipped over with the children in them. According to a CBS News report, the Atlanta-based manufacturer of children’s products has received 38 reports of the rear leg of the Table2Table 6-in-1 chairs pivoting out of position. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), five children suffered bumps and bruises when the chairs fell over.
The recall involves about 36,000 high chairs sold at Wal-Mart stores across the United States from October 2016 through December 2017. Consumers who have these chairs at home are urged to stop using them right away and contact Graco for a free repair kit at 1-800-345-4109 or online at gracobaby.com. The chairs, which were sold for about $100 each, convert to six different modes including a traditional high chair, a booster seat, and a toddler chair and table.
Injuries Caused by Nursery Products
According to the CPSC, in 2016, there were an estimated 62,300 emergency department-related injuries associated with nursery products among children under the age of 5. High chairs, cribs, mattresses, strollers, and infant carriers were associated with 70 percent of the total estimated injuries. Falls were the leading cause of injury, and the head followed by the face, were the body parts injured most frequently.
A diagnosis of internal organ injury, contusion or laceration was associated with a majority of the injuries. In addition, between 2012 and 2014, there were 284 deaths relating to nursery products. A majority of these fatalities (about 86 percent) were linked to products such as cribs, mattresses, bassinets, playpens, infant carriers and baby bouncer seats.
