Foggy Mountain Pass Crash in the Cajon Pass Injures 21

A car crash involving 30 vehicles in the Cajon Pass between the San Bernardino and the San Gabriel mountains left at least 21 people injured the morning of May 30. According to NBC Los Angeles, the crash occurred on the southbound 15 Freeway during a day of drizzle and heavy fog. The freeway was closed in the Hesperia area for about two hours as crews tried to clear out the wreckage. Injuries ranged from minor to moderate, San Bernardino County fire officials said. Those involved in the crash described it as a chain-reaction collision as vehicles began smashing into each other one after another. Officials said the crash could have been avoided had everyone slowed down.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been injured in this massive pileup. We wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Driving At a Safe Speed

Based on this news report, it appears that one or more of the drivers involved in this collision may have been driving at dangerous speeds given the foggy conditions and low visibility. California’s Basic Speed Law requires motorists not just to follow speed limits, but also operate their vehicles at a speed that is safe given the roadway and weather conditions.

For example, if there is construction work on the roadway, it calls for slower speeds because you have to expect traffic ahead of you to slow down or come to a stop. Similarly, when it’s raining (particularly in Southern California) or foggy, you have to expect traffic ahead of you to slow down. It is also important to drive without distractions such as texting, talking on the cell phone, adjusting your radio or GPS etc. It is critical to focus your attention on the roadway, particularly when conditions are challenging.

Liability Issues

It can be challenging to determine fault and liability, especially in collisions involving multiple vehicles. When there are 30 vehicles and 30 drivers involved in a collision, things could get extremely complicated. If you have been injured in a crash involving several vehicles, do not speak with insurance companies or lawyers for other parties.

Contact an experienced personal injury lawyer in your area who will help protect your rights and help you obtain fair compensation for your injuries, damages and losses. Do not rush into a settlement, which could essentially prevent you from seeking further compensation. An experienced lawyer will be able to advise you regarding the best course of action.
