Federal and local health officials are warning the public against drinking Real Water’s alkaline water after linking it to liver illness in five hospitalized children. According to a KTLA news report, the company’s president, Brent Jones, has called for stores to stop selling the product nationwide until the issue is resolved. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers, restaurants and retailers not to drink, cook with, sell or serve these products.
Illnesses Linked to the Alkaline Water
Real Water is asking that all retailers pull the products from their shelves effective immediately, hold them in the back rooms or return them to distributors. A Nevada couple filed a lawsuit this week in Nevada state court on behalf of their young son who became ill after drinking the water. Real Water is marketed in boxy blue plastic bottles as “mineral-rich, alkalized and infused with negative ions.”
The water is sold in several states including Nevada, California, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico in several stores including Sprouts, Whole Foods and Costco. It is also delivered to homes in large bottles. The company has traced the potential health issue to the company’s home delivery operation. The health district, based in Las Vegas, said it began investigating five cases of acute non-viral hepatitis that resulted in acute liver failure in November 2020 and notified the FDA.
The agency also investigated the illnesses of six others – three children and three adults – who reported less severe symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite and fatigue. Five children required hospitalization but recovered. The patients lived in four different households. The district said consuming the Real Water brand alkaline water was the only common link between all the cases. Acute non-viral hepatitis is a liver inflammation caused by exposure to toxins, overconsumption of alcohol or autoimmune disease.
