California-based Concord Farms is initiating an enoki mushroom recall because of potential listeria contamination. According to a report on Self.com, the brand’s recalled enoki mushrooms were grown in Korea, distributed from California to retail stores through various produce distributors, and sold in 5.3-oz/150-g and 7-oz/200-g packages.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that there have been no illnesses reported in relation to the recall, but is urging those who bought these products to return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
Series of Enoki Mushroom Recalls
This is the latest in a series of California-based brand recalls on enoki mushrooms because of potential listeria contamination. All the recalled mushrooms were grown in China or Korea and sent to retailers nationwide by produce distributors or wholesalers from specific states, including California.
The first enoki mushroom recall posted by the FDA was initiated on April 20. It came after routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. On April 22, Golden Medal Mushroom Inc. recalled its enoki mushrooms and on May 28, Rainfield Marketing Group recalled all cases of its enoki mushroom packages after routine testing by the California Department of Public Health revealed the presence of listeria. Also, on May 28, Marquis Worldwide Specialty Inc. announced it was recalling all 200-g packages of organic enoki mushrooms.
Listeria bacteria could potentially lead to an infection called listeriosis, which causes about 260 deaths and 1,600 illnesses each year in the United States. While some people suffer mild symptoms such as fever and diarrhea, some others are at high risk of becoming seriously ill.
Pregnant women, newborns, people over the age of 65, and those with compromised immune systems could experience more severe symptoms. They could also develop an invasive infection, which occurs when the infection spreads outside the digestive tract and becomes systemic. This causes more severe symptoms such as confusion, loss of balance, and a stiff neck. For pregnant women, it could result in stillbirths as well.
