Driving Safely As You Spring Forward

Driving Safely As You Spring Forward

As we set our clocks an hour ahead, many of us will likely deal with fatigue and sleepiness this week. As we spring forward into Daylight Saving Time, we’ll also find that it is still dark during the early morning hours when most of us Southern Californians hit the road to get to work. Reduced visibility in addition to the hour of sleep lost due to the time change can cause people to feel drowsier than usual. Sleep experts say it is helpful going to bed early about 15 minutes each night leading up to the change in clocks. This will give your body a chance to get use to the change quicker.

Here are a few useful traffic safety tips as we spring forward:

  • Make sure you bring your sunglasses along for the ride. The shift in time may mean that you are driving home while the day is still bright. You may also be leaving home in the morning or driving your kids to school when the rising sun is in your eyes. Make sure you have a pair of sunglasses in the car so you can shield your eyes from the bright sun and see the road clearly.
  • If you have the option to work from home, work a couple of days after the time change from home and steer clear of the commute. This way, you may be able to avoid other drivers who might be feeling the effects of the lack of sleep.
  • Never drive distracted. While this is true regardless of the time of year, it is particularly important now. Turn your radio down, drink your coffee at office or home and don’t eat while driving. Put your cell phone away so you can give your undivided attention to the road.
  • It is also a good idea to slow down. Excessive or dangerous speed could prove dangerous, especially at this time.
  • Be wary of pedestrians and bicyclists on the roadway. Pay attention and look for children who may be walking or darting across the street in school and residential zones. Always yield the right of way to pedestrians.

If you have been injured in a car accident, you may be able to seek and obtain compensation for your injuries, damages and losses. An experienced California car accident lawyer can help explain the intricacies of the law and make sure your legal rights and best interests are protected.
