Sharing the Road with Bicycles
Under Nevada law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of other vehicles. Bicyclists must ride to the right unless they are preparing to turn left or are able to match the speed of traffic. There are rules motorists are required to follow around bicyclists. When passing, drivers are required to move to an adjacent lane to the left if possible. If that is not possible, motorists must pass with at least 3 feet of clearance between their vehicle and the bicycle.
Nevada law clearly states that passing bicyclists safely is the motorist’s responsibility. Drivers are also required to yield to bicyclists at intersections as they would other vehicles and pedestrians. The law prohibits drivers from driving or parking in designated bicycle lanes or paths unless they are turning or in an emergency.
In bicycle accident cases where negligence is a factor, at-fault motorists can be held liable for the injuries, damages, and losses caused to riders. Injured cyclists can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, and pain and suffering. Families of deceased victims may be able to seek compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, and loss of love, care, and companionship. An experienced Las Vegas bicycle accident attorney will be able to advise victims and families regarding their legal rights and options.
