A family of five suffered significant injuries, including two children who were critically injured, as the result of a multi-vehicle rear-end crash on Highway 99 in central Fresno.
According to a report in the Fresno Bee, the major injury collision occurred on the evening of April 1 on the southbound Highway 99 just north of the Clinton Avenue exit. It resulted in severe injuries and is under investigation.
Driver Inattention Played a Part in Rear-End Crash
California Highway Patrol officials said the driver of a Dodge truck did not notice that the vehicles in front of him had either drastically slowed down or stopped because of rush traffic. As a result, the driver sideswiped two vehicles and rear-ended a third car, CHP said. The rear-ended car, a Toyota Corolla, carried the family of five.
Officials said two of the three children in the backseat of the Corolla were critically injured, and the third child also sustained major injuries as a result of the rear-end crash. They were approximately 7 to 8 years old. The parents, who were sitting in front, suffered major to moderate injuries. All victims were transported to a regional medical center. Occupants of two other vehicles struck by the Dodge were not injured. The driver of the Dodge truck was not arrested at the accident scene. CHP said he was not under the influence at the time of the crash, but was inattentive. The investigation is ongoing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with this family, which is no doubt going through a terrible time. We wish all the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Causes and Compensation Issues
Based on this news report and based on a preliminary investigation, officials say the driver who rear-ended the Toyota Corolla carrying the victims was not intoxicated at the time. However, they do believe he was not paying attention to the road. There are still a number of unanswered questions here. Was the driver distracted by a cell phone or something else at the time? Was the driver fatigued or falling asleep at the wheel? Was he driving at an unsafe rate of speed, given the traffic conditions on the highway? We trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely how this collision occurred.
The circumstances of a collision will impact any legal action taken against the negligent driver. In cases such as this rear-end crash, injured victims can seek compensation from the at-fault party for damages, including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, and past and future pain and suffering. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced California car accident lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
