Infant Hospitalized After Pit Bull Attack in Los Angeles

A 2-month-old boy was hospitalized after a brutal dog attack in his Woodland Hills home. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the pit bull became agitated when someone knocked on the door of a home in the 22600 block of Clarendon Street the afternoon of Oct. 1. The baby, who was in a car seat on the floor, began to cry. The dog escaped from a gated pen area and bit the child. An 18-month-old child was hospitalized with serious injuries to her face after a dog attacked her in her grandmother’s Riverside home. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, the dog attack occurred the night of August 3 in the home on Fern Avenue in the Casa Blanca neighborhood. A 4-year-old girl suffered severe facial injuries after a dog attacked her at her grandfather’s Riverside County property. According to a report on Patch.com, the girl was treated and released from the hospital and the dog was surrendered to be euthanized. Dog Fatally Mauls 3-month-old Girl in Sherman Oaks

A 3-month-old child was mauled to death by at least one of three dogs in a Sherman Oaks home the afternoon of May 5. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the attack was reported in the 14400 block of Benefit Street. The dogs involved in the attack, a Rottweiler, Labrador and terrier, were all family pets, officials said. It is not clear at this point how many of the family’s dogs attacked the baby. Study Shows California Led Dog Bite Insurance Claims in 2017

California is Number One in the Nation When it Comes to Dog-Related Injury Claims

A study released by the Insurance Information Institute says dog bite claims increased by 2.2 percent nationwide in 2017, the highest number of which was in California. According to a report in the Seattle Times, the value of the claims jumped significantly reaching more than $686 million for the 18,522 claims made during the year. In 2017, the total value of claims nationwide increased to $13.7 million from 337 reports. The average cost per claim reached more than $40,000, the study says. …Read the rest »

Southern California Cities Top List for Most Dog Attacks on Mail Carriers

The number of postal employees who were attacked by dogs around the country reached 6,244 in 2017, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Postal Service. That number is down by 500 in 2016. Several California cities made it to the top 17 list, the cities with the most dog bite incidents involving mail carriers. According to a recent study by researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, it is extremely important for parents to remember that while dogs may be important members of the family, they could also be a source of injury for young children. A boy was bitten twice by the same pit bull in the city of El Cajon and now, his mother is saying she is worried that the dog will return and attack again. According to an NBC Los Angeles news report, the mother says she has had to sprint through her yard twice over the last five months to rescue her son who was attacked by the neighbor’s pit bull. A 3-year-old boy was injured in a dog attack at a Palm Desert grocery store. According to a CBS news report, the dog bite incident occurred at an Albertsons supermarket on Highway 111 in Palm Desert on Feb. 5. Kelly Emmer said she was with her toddler shopping when he asked to pet what seemed like a service dog. The dog growled and lunged at her son’s face and bit him, she said. Emmer said her son Leo was wailing and “bleeding all over himself and me.”

The dog’s owner said she is blind in her left eye and said the dog is a 14-year-old service animal. Emmer said the dog was wearing a vest but there was nothing that indicated it was a service dog or people weren’t supposed to pet it. Emmers said her son has been traumatized by the dog attack and will be going to therapy soon. …Read the rest »

A 67-year-old woman who was severely mauled and nearly killed in a dog attack last year has said she needed strong faith to give her the strength to survive the brutal incident.
