34 People Killed after Boat Catches Fire and Sinks Near Santa Cruz Island

Thirty-four people have been presumed dead in a horrific Labor Day boat accident off Santa Cruz Island. According to news reports, so far, 33 bodies have been recovered. Four Feared Dead Nine Injured in Colorado River Boat Accident

Four people are missing and presumed dead and nine other have been injured including two critically, after a head-on boat accident on the Colorado River along the California-Arizona border the night of Sept. 1.  According to a report on USA Today, the recreational boats, one carrying 10 people and another with six on board, collided in Moabi Regional Park in the dark on the river that was crowded with boaters on the busy Labor Day weekend. …Read the rest »

A 70-year-old Newport Beach man died after he was severely cut by his boat’s propeller. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident was reported to the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol the afternoon of August 13, 2017 as passengers aboard the large double-decker boat attempted to save the man. The accident occurred after the man tried to climb aboard the swim step that was lowered to help him get on the boat after he and three others swam in open waters near the jetty, officials said.

At that time, someone on the boat backed it toward him to help the man get back on the boat more quickly. It was then that the man was cut by the boat’s propeller. He was pulled aboard and several people tried to do CPR. He was pronounced dead at the Coast Guard dock by Newport Beach Fire Department paramedics. Michael Harris, 26, son of former San Francisco 49ers CEO, Peter Harris, was killed in a boat crash near Catalina Island the evening of September 6, 2015.

According to an NBC news report, the crash involved a dinghy and another small boat near Descanso Bay, about a quarter mile northeast of Casino Point.

Four Injured in Newport Beach Boating Accident

Four people were injured in Newport Beach in a boating accident that took place when two boats collided in the harbor. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the injury crash occurred the night of July 14, 2013 in the harbor at 1901 Jamboree Road.

Police say a 25-foot cigarette-type boat was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the smaller, slower moving boat near the Newport Harbor jetty. One man and three women were transported to hospitals in Newport Beach and Mission Viejo. Their injuries ranged from cuts to breathing difficulties and a possible fracture.
