Bumble Bee Foods Recalls Tuna for Serious Health Risks

Bumble Bee Foods and Tri-Union Seafoods have issued a defective product recall for canned chunk light tuna because of potentially serious health risks. According to a CNN news report, the cans in question were not properly sterilized, which could result in the product spoiling or becoming contaminated with harmful bacteria that could lead to life-threatening illnesses when consumed. So far, no illnesses or deaths have been reported as a result of the recalled tuna.

Processing Issues

The products that were recalled were manufactured in the Chicken of the Sea’s Georgia production facility, which is a third-party supplier for Bumble Bee. The company is recalled 31,579 cases of canned tuna that were produced in February and distributed nationally. The deviations in the processing of the food occurred in a packing facility not owned or operated by the company, officials said, adding that they are carrying out the recall out of an abundance of caution.

Tri-City Union Seafoods is recalling 2,475 cases of Chicken of the Sea brand canned tuna because it could be undercooked due to equipment malfunction. These were produced between February 10 and March 16. Consumers who have these recalled products are urged to throw them away. Bumble Bee is working with the co-packer and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove the products from store shelves as soon as possible.
