BMW Recalls Vehicles for Fire Risk

BMW Recalls 184,000 Cars Due to Fire Risks

BMW has recalled nearly 48,000 2011 and 2012 BMW, Mini, and Rolls Royce vehicles, which pose a potential fire risk. According to Car Complaints, the auxiliary water pumps in these vehicles can fail causing the circuit boards to overheat and catch fire. The German automaker has recommended the owners of these vehicles park them outdoors until the water pumps are replaced.

Trouble with Auxiliary Water Pumps

This is apparently an issue BMW has been trying to fix since a 2011 recall of 32,000 vehicles and a January 2012 recall of 90,000 vehicles. Although recalls were issued in 2011 and 2012, BMW still received a report in October 2017 about a 2011 MINI Cooper S, which suffered from a failed electric auxiliary water pump, leading engineers to review field data. Another report was received in December 2017 when a pump failed on a 2011 550i xDrive, a vehicle that had not been previously recalled.

So, the automaker concluded the newly designed electric auxiliary water pumps supplied by Pierburg were exhibiting similar failures to the water pumps that were previously recalled even though the pump design had changed. Affected owners who have paid to replace the auxiliary water pumps should ask BMW about reimbursement.

The automaker does not have the replacement water pumps just yet. So, owners will be notified about the recall in June 2018 and will get a second notice when the replacement pumps become available. Until then, vehicle owners are advised to park away from structures and anything flammable.

Auto Product Liability Issues

There is no question that vehicles that pose the risk of a fire can be like ticking time bombs, especially when they are parked indoors. A vehicle fire that sparks a home fire could result in not just severe property damage, but could also lead to serious injuries and loss of life. If you own one of these recalled BMW vehicles, please do not take a chance and park them outdoors.

If you have been injured by these or other vehicle defects, you may be eligible to obtain compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities and pain and suffering. Contact an experienced auto defect lawyer who will fight for your rights and make sure that the negligent automaker is held accountable.
