An Azusa man was critically injured in a car accident after the gas pedal on his 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup truck jammed and his vehicle suddenly accelerated.
According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the incident occurred the afternoon of September 27, 2015.
The man, Trevor Robben, was driving the truck on 210 Freeway when he called 911 reporting that his accelerator had jammed and that he couldn’t stop his car.
He also told the 911 dispatcher that his cruise control would not turn off.
Crash Causes Severe Injuries
The report states Robben’s vehicle was traveling at 90 mph on the 2010. He realized his cruise control was stuck and told the dispatcher that he could not get his car to stop or even slow down.
After several minutes of talking to the operator, Robben lost control of the vehicle, hit a raised embankment and sound wall, then went airborne and ended up back on the freeway where his truck finally overturned.
California Highway Patrol officials say Robben was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the car. But, family members say Robben was trying to jump out of the vehicle before it crashed. Robben was hospitalized with major injuries including a fractured spine and skull. CHP officials are still investigating the incident.
Sudden or Unintended Acceleration
Sudden or unintended acceleration occurs when a vehicle accelerates out of control. This could happen due to mechanical issues such as an accelerator getting stuck or a defective floor mat causing the accelerator to jam.
Electronic issues can also cause sudden or unintended acceleration.
We trust officials are looking into what caused Robben’s vehicle to accelerate out of control suddenly. It is crucial that the pickup truck is preserved right away so an expert can thoroughly examine it for mechanical, electronic or other defects that may have caused this sudden acceleration.
Contacting an Experienced Lawyer
In this case, the victim would be well advised to contact an experienced auto defect law firm that can thoroughly investigate what occurred here and why. Law enforcement officials and departments often lack the ability to investigate auto defect issues.
A nationally renowned auto defect law firm will be able to conduct an independent investigation of the vehicle and determine precisely what caused the malfunction.
In such cases, the automaker can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses.
Injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
