Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Exploding NutriBullet Blenders

At least 22 people have filed product liability lawsuits against the manufacturer of the NutriBullet blender alleging that the device malfunctioned and caused serious injuries including burns and lacerations. According to a CBS news report, the NutriBullet is billed as a high-speed appliance that can pulverize foods better than an ordinary blender. But some users say that the device is also dangerous.

Product Defect Allegations

Sheryl Utal said she used her NutriBullet daily for years to make smoothies until one morning it exploded after about 20 seconds of use, causing second-degree burns. She said her arms felt like they were “on fire.” Another victim who has filed a lawsuit is Rosa Rivera, mother of Jenni Rivera, an American pop music icon and actress, who died in a plane crash with six others near Iturbide, Nuevo Leon, in 2012. Rosa Rivera said she suffered severe facial burn injuries after the blender exploded.

Both Utal and Rivera said they are speaking up because they want to warn others about the grave danger posed by this blender. NutriBullet has issued a statement denying the allegations saying that these explosions were extremely rare and occurred because consumers did not follow operating instructions and failed to heed the warnings that came with the product.

Manufacturers’ Responsibilities

All manufacturers have a responsibility to make sure that the products they make are safe for consumers to use. In addition, they are required to warn users about any dangers they may encounter during normal use of the product. However, in the case of NutriBullet, even though we’ve heard of these reports for a few years, the company has not taken any steps to look into the claims or issue a product recall.

Injured victims of defective products may be able to seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitative treatment, pain and suffering and emotional distress. As the victims of these NutriBullet explosions state here, the goal of these product liability lawsuits is not just money to cover damages, but also to warn other people about the dangers of what appears to be a faulty and hazardous product.

If you or a loved one has been injured due to a dangerous or defective product, it is important that you contact an experienced product defect lawyer who can provide you with more information about pursuing your legal rights.
